Learning Support Region 2 - The REMIX

Learning Support Region 2 - The REMIX
Learning Support Region 2 sponsored their mid-year professional learning conference, The REMIX on Saturday, February 8th in Redding, to a sold-out after school audience.  Rafe Esquith was the Keynote Presenter, a school teacher who works with mostly immigrants or children of immigrants, living in high poverty in a Los Angeles neighborhood plagued by guns, gangs, and violence.  He inspired the audience with his stories of his students who voluntarily come to class at 6:30 am and often stay until five in the afternoon. They learn math, reading and science.

But they also perform Shakespeare and learn life skills that will last them a lifetime.  His students often score in the top one percent on standardized tests and go on to attend the best universities.  For his near-heroic work, Esquith is the only teacher to be awarded the President’s National Medal of the Arts.  He has received the National Teacher of the Year Award and has also written four books; with his most recent being the critically acclaimed Real Talk for Real Teachers, published in 2013.

Other workshops included a Healthy Behaviors strand, Music & Dance, Real-World Enrichment Clubs, Boosting Staff Performance, The Food Mood Connection (Natural Approaches to Balance Brain Chemistry), to name a few.

Participant feedback about The REMIX has been overwhelmingly positive: Over the years I’ve listened to hundreds of keynote speeches throughout the US. Rafe Esquith’s presentation at your conference stands out as the most memorable and inspiring I’ve ever heard! His passion, energy and commitment were matched by his formula for providing every student with opportunities to exceed their expectations of what is possible.”  (Dr. Andria Fletcher – a nationally-recognized expert in program, policy and fund development)

“Congratulations on a job well done with The REMIX Conference! I have heard nothing but raves from my staff and they are SUPER energized and ready to implement some great ideas! (Program Director)
