MEDIA RELEASE

April 4, 2016

California Academic Decathlon results were released in Sacramento on March 26.  Three Butte County students won gold medals and one got a perfect score. The students were all from Oroville Union High School District’s Las Plumas High School.  In Division III, Tyler Bruce was the top, scholastic scorer in the Interview competition.  Emma Goitia was the top, varsity scorer, with a perfect score, in the Speech competition.  MacKennah Tweedt was among the highest scoring students overall.  Butte County Superintendent of Schools, Tim Taylor, said, ““We are very proud of Las Plumas students and their exceptional competitiveness at the state level.”

This was the second time a Las Plumas student achieved a perfect score.  Emma Goita did it this year, and Aubrianna Queen did it in 2015, said coach Cristian Bruce.  Bruce added, "I couldn't be more proud of the Las Plumas Academic Decathlon team. They diligently rose to the challenge of high expectations.  Their diligence was awarded with three Gold medals at the state level, which is an amazing accomplishment when you look at their stiff competition. The entire team represented us exceptionally well throughout the competition with their maturity, grace, intelligence, and positive energy."

In all, 581 students from 67 high school teams competed in this year’s California Academic Decathlon at the State level. Las Plumas Principal Dan Ramos said, “We are proud of our team and their advisor.  Las Plumas had several students on the Academic Decathlon team, who were also members of the Mock Trial team.  Both groups made it to the state finals in their respective competitions, which happened to be on the same day in different towns.  The students and advisors worked out a way to solve the problem and move on to represent our school and county well. This type of cooperation and commitment shows that these students have a bright future ahead of them.”

Each year, Butte County Office of Education (BCOE) hosts the Academic Decathlon at the County level for Butte County schools.  From there, winners advance to State competition.  Mia Osborne-Ng has been coordinating the Butte County Academic Decathlon for the BCOE Superintendent of Schools for the past twenty years.  Ms. Osborne-Ng said she has “never met a team more dedicated to the original concept of the Decathlon as founded by Orange County Superintendent Robert Peterson in 1968, to encourage not only the highest-level students but to change the lives of all levels of students. Las Plumas High School is paramount in modeling the teamwork it takes to develop strengths in each other as a team.  They are respectful, supportive, genuine, and competitive, not to mention awesome!  It has been my pleasure to watch Coach Bruce develop educational excellence in each student on the team. Congratulations!”
